PENTECOST

Pentecost (from Greek pentecoste, “50th day”) is major festival in the Christian church, celebrated on the Sunday that falls on the 50th day after Easter. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples after the death, Resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus Christ It marks the beginning of the Christian church’s mission to the world. Red is the liturgical color for Pentecost; common symbols for Pentecost include tongues of flame, the descending dove, symbols of the church, and a downward arrow.

This year Pentecost fall on Sunday, May 19.  In addition to our Sunday morning worship services, Pentecost will also be celebrated with a special Evensong Service, followed by a Pentecost potluck dinner.

To help lead worship at the Evensong Service the choir will be presenting three selections under the direction of guest choir clinician, Dr. Bill Thomas, of Furman University.

The Church Family Fellowship Team is hosting a potluck dinner in Davidson River Hall following the Evensong Service. They will provide ham and drinks and ask the congregation to bring sides such as baked beans, sweet potato casseroles, rolls, desserts, assorted salads, green bean casseroles. Sign up posters will be placed in the hallways.  This is a very festive time to dress in bright colors such as gold, and red.

Wednesday Break, 6:00 p.m.

The Wednesday Break mission is to provide opportunities to grow spiritually through Christian fellowship.  May will be “Mostly Music Month.”  On May 1, Gloria Sanders will describe the role of the choir, Westminster Bells, special music events, etc, in the life of our church.  On the 8th, Bob Twomey, ranger at Dupont State Recreational Forest, will tell us about the new visitor center, as well as some of the features of this beautiful forest.  We return to music on May 15, with special guest Kathy Hardwick, who will sing and play the harp that she made from recycled materials.  Our final program of the year will once again feature our favorite musicians from Celestial Mountain Music and a program of old-time music.  Wednesday Break happens each Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and consists of Fellowship, Fun, and Food. The programs are for the entire family. If you are looking for another way to meet and talk and have a good time at church, Wednesday Break is for you!

Here is our schedule for May.  We hope you'll be able to join us!

VBS1

Introducing Spark Summer VBS!  We would like you to help!  Our vacation Bible School this summer is centered around placing God’s Word into children’s hands.  Children will explore the Daily Bible story in multiple ways as they meet in small groups with Shepherds, in the Large Group Gathering and workshops on art, games, science and video.  Each day also has a theme word to help children focus on a concept from each story.  Look for the theme word to be woven into the activities for the day in all sorts of ways.  Mark your calendar for June 17-20 for Spark Summer fun!  Ages pre-school through fifth grade are invited to attend.  Contact Gary at the church office to find out more.

Children's Summer Garden

This summer the children of our church will be growing a Children’s Garden.  Each Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. starting June 9th, the children will gather at their garden to hear and talk about one of Jesus’s nature stories and afterwards tend their garden.  This will be a “hands on” way to learn about nurturing creation, relating the Word to a real-life activity, watching the miracle of growing things, and then sharing what they produce with others.  All children ages 4 and up are invited to be a part!  If you have an interest in helping please click here to contact Gary Greene.

The Garden of Remembrance is a serenely beautiful setting where we can give thanks to God for the earthly and the eternal lives of our departed loved ones. It is an ideal place to reflect on the first resurrection and to look ahead to the promise that, alive or dead, we belong to our Lord. (Romans 14:8) The garden allows for the placement or the scattering of ashes of our deceased members and their immediate families: where they worshipped Christ, where they experienced His love and grace, and where they enjoyed Christian fellowship.
